Tourkolekas, Municipality of Megalopoli, Arcadia

Description

Tourkolekas is a historic mountain village in the region of Phalaisia, Arcadia, closely associated with the Greek Revolution and the tradition of the klephts during the pre‑revolutionary years. In the 18th century the village became synonymous with resistance, developing into a refuge and base for klepht bands not only from the wider Leonidio area but from across Arcadia. The surrounding region also served as a place of shelter for many fighters. According to tradition, after the Orlov Revolt (1770), Konstantis Kolokotronis sought refuge here with his pregnant wife, Zampia. It was in this area, under a tree near a cave at Ramovouni, that she is said to have given birth to Theodoros Kolokotronis. Tourkolekas was also the birthplace of Stamatelos Tourkolekas, father of the renowned revolutionary captain Nikitas Stamatelopoulos, known as Nikitaras the Turk‑Eater.
