Atsicholos, Municipality of Megalopoli, Arcadia

Description

Atsicholos is a small settlement in Arcadia, built on the western slopes of the Lousios Gorge, in a landscape of exceptional natural and historical interest. The area shows continuous human presence from antiquity through the Byzantine period, with agrarian populations active in the fertile plain of ancient Gortys. During the late Ottoman period, Atsicholos occupied a key position along the Karýtaina–Megalopoli route. Communication was facilitated by the single‑arched bridge over the Lousios River, which enabled the passage of people and goods between the mountainous and lowland zones of Gortynia, thereby reinforcing the role of Atsicholos as a transitional point between agricultural and commercial regions of the time. During the Greek Revolution of 1821, Atsicholos served as a control point for movement in the wider area; owing to its geographical position, it was used by Greek fighters as a site of surveillance and defence. In 1826, at a critical moment during Ibrahim Pasha’s advance into the Peloponnese, the fighter Koliopoulos undertook the task of guarding the pass near Atsicholos. This action formed part of the broader Greek effort to control mountain passages and delay the enemy’s advance, particularly in areas whose rugged terrain favoured defensive operations.
