Ano Karyes, Municipality of Megalopoli, Arcadia
Ano Karyes is a mountain settlement in Arcadia, built on the eastern slope of Mount Lykaion. Near the village, at the location known as “Kelia,” lies a fortified cave that served as a refuge and base of operations for the klephts of the region; during the Greek Revolution, the natural defensibility of the landscape made it an ideal place for concealment and for the activities of armed groups. In 1825, during the Battle of Karyes, Greek fighters managed to confront and defeat the army of Ibrahim Pasha, boosting the morale of the inhabitants and the revolutionary forces of the area. Today, the village is dominated by the bust of Kyriakos Karagiannis, a local fighter of 1821, erected in tribute to his contribution to the Struggle.
