Stone Bridge over the Lousios River, Atsicholos, Arcadia

Description

During the Second Ottoman Rule, after 1715, a stable commercial and road network took shape across the Peloponnese, meeting the growing needs of a flourishing rural landscape. It was within this context that the stone bridge near the village of Atsicholos, spanning the Lousios River, was constructed. The bridge—single‑arched, imposing, with Islamicate features and a pointed arch—served the Karýtaina–Megalopolis route and stands as a characteristic example of the traditional architecture of the Lagkadinó masons, renowned stone craftsmen with deep knowledge of vernacular engineering. Such structures were more than technical accomplishments. They played a crucial role in linking regions and facilitating the movement of people, livestock, and goods. Particular emphasis during construction was placed on adapting each bridge to the natural terrain. The builders studied the river’s morphology with care and reinforced the abutments, which supported the weight of the arched span and ensured the stability of the entire structure
