Stekoula Kolokotroni – Plapouta

Figures such as Stekoula Kolokotroni–Plapouta highlight the role of the woman‑companion, who offers quiet, steadfast, and unwavering support to her loved one.

Description

Stekoula Kolokotroni was born in 1787 in Arcadia and was the daughter of Anagnostis Kolokotronis, brother of Theodoros Kolokotronis. On 20 May 1803 she married Dimitrakis Plapoutas. Stekoula first confronted the Ottomans during the feast of Saint Paraskevi in Alonistaina, Arcadia, when her husband was wounded in a violent incident by Stavros Dimitrakopoulos, who had aligned himself with the Ottomans due to a personal dispute with the Kolokotronis family. Dimitrakis Plapoutas remained bedridden for a long period, and she cared for him with unwavering devotion. When the Revolution broke out, Stekoula stood firmly at his side and is even said to have taken part in a clash with the Turks from Lalas, during which she fatally wounded an Ottoman soldier.
