Monastery of Saint Demetrios, Tourkolekas, Megalopoli
The foundation of the Monastery of Saint Demetrios in the village of Tourkolekas, Arcadia, dates back to the 13th century. It developed into an important religious centre, where a school operated during the Second Ottoman Period (1715–1821). According to local tradition, on 15 May 1825 the chieftains gathered here under the leadership of Papaflessas to plan their confrontation with the army of Ibrahim. A few weeks later, on 7 June 1825, the monastery was set on fire by the Ottomans. The present stone chapel was built in 1998–1999 in memory of the New Martyr (Child Martyr) Ioannis Tourkolekas, the younger brother of the Greek Revolution fighter Nikitas Stamatelopoulos (“Nikitaras”). Ioannis, at the age of only eleven, was tortured to death by the Ottomans in 1816 in Monemvasia, together with his father, Stamatelos Tourkolekas.
