Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour, Akovos, Megalopolis
The Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour is located in Akovos, Arcadia, and celebrates its feast on 6 August. It is a historic church closely linked to the life of Theodoros Kolokotronis, as Akovos was the birthplace of his wife and the ancestral home of several members of his family. According to local tradition, near the sanctuary of the church once stood a large kermes oak, known as “the Pournara,” under whose shade Kolokotronis is said to have held councils with his companions during the Revolution. Although the tree no longer survives, a stone at the site is still preserved today, bearing what is believed to be the initials he carved himself. The church stands not only as a place of worship but also as an important historical monument of the region, preserving the memory of the Greek Revolution of 1821 and the legacy of the “Old Man of the Morea.”
