Church of Saint Paraskevi, Akovos, Megalopoli

Description

At the summit of the historic mountain of Drampala, a few kilometres north of Akovos, stands the church of Saint Paraskevi. During the Greek Revolution of 1821, a small chapel occupied the site of the present church and served as an improvised hospital for wounded fighters. This chapel was destroyed by the Ottomans, but it was later rebuilt by the Kolokotronis family. Today, the surrounding area has been landscaped and hosts a Monument to the Fallen, honouring the memory of the heroes who died in the Battle of Drampala in 1825, when the Greeks succeeded in defeating the army of Ibrahim.
