Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos “Boura,” Arcadia

Description

The Monastery of Panagia Boura, a historic monastic foundation of Arcadia, stands on the mountainside between Leontari and Falaisia, and its construction dates to the mid‑12th century. After the failed Orlov Revolt in 1770, the monastery suffered a brutal raid by Turco‑Albanians — irregular armed groups unleashed by the Ottomans in retaliation for the uprising. The attackers slaughtered the monks and caused extensive damage, including the deterioration of the frescoes in the katholikon. Despite the destruction, the monastery’s defensive tower appears to have survived in part or to have been rebuilt shortly thereafter. At the dawn of the Greek Revolution of 1821, the Monastery of Panagia Boura emerged as an important centre of the struggle: it hosted a school for the education of Christian children, served as a place of initiation for members of the Filiki Etaireia, and functioned as a supply station for local chieftains and fighters. During Ibrahim Pasha’s campaign in the Peloponnese, the monks of the monastery resisted with courage and sacrificed their lives in its defence. Today, the defensive tower remains visible, incorporated into the enclosure of the church.
