Holy Monastery of Saint George of Rekitsa, Dyrrachio, Arcadia

Description

The Holy Monastery of Saint George of Rekitsa, built in a strategic location at the foothills of Mount Taygetos near the village of Dyrrachio in Arcadia, is one of the most significant religious and historical monuments of the region. During the Ottoman period, the monastery served as a spiritual refuge as well as a place of shelter and support for klephts and armatoloi. In the years leading up to the Greek Revolution, Rekitsa played a decisive role: it became a site of initiation into the Filiki Etaireia and a centre for the instruction of new members. Here, the weapons of Greek chieftains and fighters were blessed, and the monastery functioned as a refuge for the wounded, for women and children, and for the elderly. It also provided basic education to the children of the surrounding area. According to tradition, Papaflessas lived as a monk here for a period until 1817. Abbot Parthenios and the monks of Rekitsa actively supported the Revolution, and thanks to their assistance the monastery became a supply centre and a base for revolutionary operations.
